Acitretin

Acitretin is the major metabolite of etretinate and is a retinoid used to treat psoriasis. Acitretin is a synthetic analog of retinoic acid, the main metabolite of etretinate, which has been used to treat psoriasis for years. The exact mechanism is not understood (2, 3). Retinoids have a similar structure to vitamin A and are involved in the normal growth of skin cells. Acitretin inhibits excessive cell growth and keratinization (thickening of skin cells due to protein deposition), and therefore, reduces the thickening of skin, plaque formation, and scaling seen in psoriasis. Acitretin is teratogenic in humans and is contraindicated in pregnancy. The duration of teratogenic risk is not known.
