Acenocoumarol is used for short-term anticoagulation needs but is not approved for use in the USA. Similar to other coumarin derivatives, the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol are mediated via inhibition of vitamin K epoxide reductase, which impairs gamma carboxylation of glutamic acid residues of the precursor proteins of factors II, VII, IX, and X.
